Can I fit this processor in my old Compaq? If so, how exactly?

My Compaq Deskpro has a Pentium III, but can I safely add the following and, if so will it work OK?

And how do I add it on, please? Is it an external plug 'n' play, or do I fiddle with the innards somehow?

This is the specs of processor I have my eye on (with a link to the product page(s) at the end.

sorry mate, not a chance!

if only it was that easy.

instead you will need to upgrade your motherboard, power supply and ram also.

the motherboard you need will cost around £60 to £120, the ram between £30 and £150 depending on how much you want, and your going to need a minimum of 600watt power supply at a cost of around £50.

if you don't know what your doing then don't try - you will pretty much have to rip everything out of the case and connect all the cables and everything back up to your new equipment. You also need to buy specific items that are all compatible.

Pentium 3's are very old technology in pc terms.
Reply:Hon if I were you I'd just go out and buy another desktop pc. My old computer was a compaq deskpro pentium III and I loved it to bits........ but it wasn't worth upgrading ANY parts on it because it was basically pretty old and there are far easier ways of getting a much better computer for a lot less hassle and a reasonable price.
Reply:The sockets must be compatible (same number) or it will not fit. Judging from the question. I assume you have never done this? If that is the case, you are in the easiest place on the mobo to screw up. Read a good how-to guide, use a wriststrap and thermal paste, and don't force it.Yes it is in the innards.
Reply:Sorry, AMD processor donnot fit into intel slot after slot7 technology. If you wanna buy the AMD processor, buy it together with the mainboard for it. If you donnot familiar with computer technical work, get a technician do it for you. It's definitely not external plug n play job.
Reply:No. You need a motherboard with a Processor Socket Socket AM2 to install that chip. Your link lists some AM2 compatible motherboards (mainboards) that you can install in a bare ATX PC case.
