3-prong plug doesn't fit in our 3-prong outlets?

i posted this question earlier this morning, but my wording must not have been clear. i'm NOT trying to plug a 3-prong plug into a 2-prong socket. the reason the plug does not fit is that the third prong does not have a flat side like the outlet does. i need an adapter that can accommodate a third prong that is round, w/o a flat side.

i've just purchased a window unit a/c that doesn't plug into my wall outlet. it is 15 amp, 115 volt, and 12,000 btu. the 3rd prong on the plug is round and doesn't fit any of our wall outlets. we live an apartment in brooklyn, and i don't know anything about our wiring. i think this unit may need a dedicated circuit, but i hope there is some adapter that will work. if you can give me any info, that would be fantastic!

Additional Details

just to clarify: we have 3 prong wall outlets, but the 3rd prong opening has a flat side. the 3rd prong on the a/c plug is completely round and does not have a flat side, so it doesn't fit. hope this helps.

You have a American standard NEMA 5-15 Type B on the A/C, and NEMA 5-15 Type A on the wall (the common kind). The ground prong is longer on Type B so it gets grounded before power gets to it. It'll work with your regular Type A outlets yes, goto home improvement store and ask/look for that adapter (type b to a) - you could alternately change the outlet to type B, or change the cord on the A/C to type A.
Reply:the a/c you have requires 220 v outlet you need to have 220 volt circuit run to accomodate consult an electrician
Reply:There isn't an adapter. Your AC pulls a heavier load, requiring a heavier than standard outlet/wire and probably a dedicated circuit. (Nothing else on it.)

Consult your local home improvement store if you're a skilled do it yourselfer, or call an electrician.
Reply:sounds like those outlets will not hold the voltage and would be very dangerous so i suggest you get a smaller unit or havean eletrician install an outlet properly
Reply:I'm just guessing, but maybe these outlets are old and need to be updated, go to your local hardware store and buy the type of outlet and eletrical box you need and switch it out, requires a little wiring though, if you don't know how call an electrician.
Reply:You are saying the ground is round and doesn't have a flat side like the outlet. Not all ground plugs have a flat side either. This should fit. You may need to make sure the prong is not out of round. It could have been smashed slightly and may need reshaped.
