A light bulb has a resistance of 230 . It is connected to a standard wall socket (120 V rms, 60.0 Hz).
(a) Determine the rms current in the bulb.
(b) Determine the rms current in the bulb after a 13.0 µF capacitor is added in series in the circuit.
(c) It is possible to return the current in the bulb to the value calculated in part (a) by adding an inductor in series with the bulb and the capacitor. What is the value of the inductance of this inductor?
Physics, Circuits Containing Resistance, Capacitance, and Inductance?
Resistance changes with temperature.
(a) Provided that the stated resistance is that of the hot bulb, the rms current will be 120 Volts/230 Ohms = 0.5217 Amps.
(b) Next let's calculate the Impedance of the Capacitor at 60 Hz : Xc=1/(2*Pi*f*C) (notice that Xc=1/2PifC): = 1/[6.2832*(60 Hz)*(13*10^-6)] = ~204 Ohms.
230 in series with 204 = 434 Ohms
120 Volts/434Ohms = 0.276 Amps
(c) To counteract the presence of the capacitor we will connect an inductor in series. It's impedance would have to be the same as that of the capacitor: Xl=2*Pi*f*L (notice that Xl=2PifL), Xl=204, let's calculate L:
L=Xl/(2*Pi*f) = 204/(6.2832*60) = 0.54113 Henries
I hope I didn't make a mistake in the calculations.

Please rate my PC in gaming terms?
I know it isn't top of the line but it's the most I could get with my budget.
Anyway:
Sempron 2800+ (socket 754)
MSI K8MM-V Mobo
1gb ddr 300 ram
2 160gb seagate HDDs
inno3d geforce 7300GT 256mb (128 bit) agp
4 aux case fans
How far could it go in gaming? (i.e. highest settings it could muster for bfme1 or even bfme2 and c%26amp;c3 and so and such)
Thanks guys!
Please rate my PC in gaming terms?
BFME 1, perhaps medium settings. BFME 2, lowest settings at best, and C%26amp;C3, I wouldn't even try. Sorry but that video card is not a gaming card, it is meant for average user who don't plan to use their system for games.
Reply:on a scale of 1-10 i would say a 3. your processor is old and sucky. your ram is old and slow and sucky. AGP is old and slow and sucky.
Reply:It's a good pc for gaming, maybe you can't play all the new games, but I have something similar and it's doing great 4 me, maybe if you change your cpu for something greater it'll be juts fine.
Reply:u might wanna get a better graphics card and a new cpu when u have hte money so u can upgrade, it wouldnt be good for gaming, ur 7300 gt is old, u might have low (or medium) for all of those games, u'll pc might not even play c%26amp;c 3

Physics Question (An electric heater is used to boil...)?
An electric heater is used to boil small amounts of water and consists of a 15 ohm coil that is immersed directly in water. It operates from a 12.0V socket. How much time is required for this heater to raise the temperature of 0.50KG water from 13deg C to the normal boiling point?
I didn't understand this problem at all.. the book states that it is a harder question, and I do not know how to get the answer.
V= MC(DeltaT)/Q
Is that the equation that I use?
can anyone help me?
thanks
-aly
Physics Question (An electric heater is used to boil...)?
energy required to heat water from 13 to 100 deg C
Q = m c delta T = 0.5 (kg) 4181(I/kg-oC) (100-13)
Q = 181873.5 Joule (c sp heat of h2o)
This Q will have ro be supplied by electric heater
Power supplied by heater = V^2 /R = Q / time
Q = V^2 *t / R
t = R Q /V^2 = 15*181873.5 /12*12 = 18945.16 secs
t = 5.262 hours
time is high because voltage is very low
Reply:Volts (V) = Current (A) x Resistance (R)
A = V/R = 12/15 = 0.8Amps.
Watts = V x A = 12 x 0.8 = 9.6 Watts
1Joule/second = 1 Watt. = 9.6J/s
To heat the water, requires 500g x 87°C(ΔT) x 4.184J/g/°C
= 182,000J
182,000 ÷ 9.6J/s = 18,959seconds
= 316minutes. = 5.3 hours.
Reply:the power of the heater is v^2/R
= 12^2/15 = 9.6 watts.
This means 9.6 jouls of heat per second.
The heat required by water
= mass of water * specific heat * temp rise
=0.5*4185*(100-13)
note- specific heat of water = 4185 j/kg/deg k and boiling point of water =100)
so heat required = 182047 J
time required = 182047/9.6 = 18963 seconds.

Is this a good combo for the $$ ???
OK..
I am looking to upgrade my AMD Athlon 2500+ w/ a Giga-Byte MoBo, and a 256mb Sapphire Ati Card....
Here are the following items I am looking into:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+
ASUS M2N4-SLI Socket AM2 w/ Nforce4 SLI MoBo
Corsair XMS2 1G (2x512Mb) Dual Channel Memory
Sapphire 100142L Radeon X1300 512Mb V/C
All of this will go into my current ATX case, with a 300 Watt P/S
what do you all think ?? I only have around $400 to play with AND most importantly..I am NOT a gamer...That's what my PS2 is for !! :)
thanks...
Scott
Is this a good combo for the $$ ???
Not at all bad for a $400 rig.
Reply:looks good but if running dual core and a 512 video card. thern i would go no lower than a 500w power supply
Reply:If you can get that for $400, go for it!! you got yourself a bargain there! If, you need to cut back a little, consider a smaller graphics card, you don't need a huge graphics card if you're not gaming

Physics? Alternating Current?
A light bulb is connected to a 240 V wall socket. The current in the bulb depends on the time t according to the relation I = (0.707 A) sin[ (251.2 Hz) t ].
(a) What is the frequency of the alternating current?
Hz
(b) What is the resistance of the bulb's filament?
(c) What is the average power delivered to the light bulb?
W
Physics? Alternating Current?
(a)f=251.2/2pi=40 Hz
(b)R=240/0.707*o.707=480 Ohms
(c)P=240*240/480=120 watts
Reply:(a) we have 2*pi*f=251.2 Hz.
f= 251.2/2*3.14
f= 39.96 hz
(b) from the eqn, max current= 0.707.
therefore, mean current= max current/sqrt2
therefore, mean current is o.5 amper
(c) power= V*I
=240* 0.5
=120 watt
